Understanding Supported Living vs. Companion Care: A Beginner’s Comparison
GEM Support Services | Northeast Florida IDD Resource
When exploring APD waiver services for your loved one, two terms appear repeatedly: supported living and companion care. Both sound helpful, but what’s the actual difference? Understanding these distinct service types helps you advocate for the support that truly matches your family member’s needs and goals.
Supported Living Defined
Supported living provides residential support services for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities who live in their own homes or community settings—not in the family home. This service focuses on helping individuals maintain independence in their chosen living environment.
Supported living coaches assist with daily living activities like meal preparation, household management, medication reminders, and personal care. They help individuals navigate challenges that arise in independent living while building skills that increase autonomy over time.
The key distinction: supported living happens where the individual lives independently, whether that’s an apartment, shared housing arrangement, or other community residence. Support comes to them in their own space.
Companion Care Defined
Companion care provides non-residential support focused on community integration, social skill development, and meaningful daily activities. This service supports individuals regardless of where they live—including those still residing in the family home.
Companion care providers accompany individuals into the community for activities like shopping, recreation, volunteer opportunities, and social events. They facilitate skill-building in real-world environments and help develop the social connections that create quality of life.
The key distinction: companion care focuses on community participation and engagement rather than residential support. It supplements family caregiving by providing structured community experiences and skill development.
Who Benefits from Each Service?
Supported living typically serves adults who have transitioned or are transitioning out of the family home into independent community living. These individuals need ongoing support to maintain their residence successfully but are ready for—and desire—greater autonomy.
Companion care serves individuals across living situations who benefit from structured community engagement and social skill development. This includes adults living with family who need support accessing community activities, building friendships, and developing life skills outside the home.
Many individuals receive both services as part of their comprehensive support plan, with companion care facilitating community integration while supported living ensures residential stability.
How GEM Delivers Both Services
At GEM Support Services, we provide both supported living coaching and companion care throughout Northeast Florida. Our person-centered approach means we don’t just deliver services—we help families determine which combination of supports best matches their loved one’s current needs, living situation, and long-term goals.
During initial conversations, we explore where your family member currently lives, what independence they’ve achieved, what goals they’re working toward, and what support gaps exist. This assessment guides recommendations that make sense for your specific situation.
Making the Right Choice
Choosing between or combining these services depends entirely on your loved one’s individual circumstances. There’s no universal “better” option—only what’s right for your family member at this stage of their journey.
Talk with your support coordinator about both service types. Ask providers like GEM to explain how they deliver each service and help you envision what support could look like for your loved one specifically.
